Lessons from the Lost Boys

My 13 year old is reading the amazing book called They Poured Fire On Us From The Sky. It is the story of 3 Lost Boys from Sudan. Just their story in their own words. Sudan, Lost Boys, Eastern Africa this is all new to my son.

So this morning(1st day of winter break!!) we got on National Geographic’s website to learn about Sudan and the Lost Boys. One of the video clips was of a documentary called God Grew Tired of US, documenting some of the Lost Boys coming to America. In the video clip, it showed one of the Lost Boys during their first Christmas here in the States. This young Sudanese guy says to the camera guy, “I don’t understand what this tree(pointing to a Christmas tree) or the Santa man has to do with the birth of Jesus Christ. I have all these questions, but I have no one to answer them.”

I laughed when I heard it. To see ourselves through the eyes of someone else is very interesting to me. At its core there is nothing bad about Christmas trees or exchanging presents or Mr. Santa himself. They are part of our culture. As much as hamburgers or fireworks on the 4th.

So how would you answer this young Sudanese guy?
